Asking For A Friend Part 4: Be Ready

 • Series: Asking for a Friend

Have you had questions and wondered what you should do or how you should answer questions our friends have about religion and Christianity? All the answers are in The Word and the Bible is perfect "How-to" book. 1 Peter 3:15 “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” David Kinnaman “Many of us today turn to our devices to help us make sense of the world. Young people, especially, use the screens in their pockets as counselors, entertainers, instructors, even sex educators. Why build up the courage to have what will likely be an awkward conversation with a parent, pastor, or teacher when you can just ask your phone and no one else will be the wiser?” 1. Can you be a gay Christian? 1 Corinthians 10:13 “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” Galatians 3:26 “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Caleb Kaltenbach “We can be accepting but not approving. We can be loving without applauding. We can be compassionate without commending.” 2. Is it okay to live together before you get married? Hebrews 13:4 (NIV) “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure…” 3. How should we treat the Old Testament command to keep the Sabbath? Mark 2:27-28 “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” 4. Can a Christian drink alcohol, and if so how much? Ephesians 5:18 “Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Romans 14:21 “It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble.” 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 “Everything is permissible”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”—but not everything is constructive.” 5. As a Christian how do I handle toxic people or relationships? Matthew 7:6 (NIV) “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 “Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 5:11-12 “I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.” 6. Where do dinosaurs fit in with the biblical text? Job 40:15-19 “Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it.” Job 41:1-2 “Can you catch Leviathan with a hook or put a noose around its jaw? Can you tie it with a rope through the nose or pierce its jaw with a spike?” 7. Can you lose your salvation? Hebrews 6:4-6 “For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened—those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come—and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame.” 8. Now what? Put yourself into positions where you have to give an answer.
